Why Does My Child Need A Dental Crown?

In most cases, dental crowns are required when kids have large cavities or are pre-cooperative for invasive treatment and can benefit from a minimally invasive option such as a Hall Crown.

Cavities are caused by bacteria in a child’s mouth that consume the sugars and starches we eat to produce acid. Over time, this acid eats away at the outer layer of your child’s tooth, causing tooth decay or a “cavity.” Small cavities can usually be treated with a dental filling; however, it’s usually better to treat extensive decay with a dental crown.

Crowns aren’t just used to treat decayed teeth either. They can also be used to repair damaged teeth. If your child slips and falls, has an accident while playing, or takes a hard hit while playing a contact sport, this can break or crack their tooth. Crowns are usually the best way to restore and protect teeth damaged by oral trauma.

Pre-Fitted Stainless Steel Crowns Are Ideal For Baby Teeth

At our office, we use pre-fitted stainless steel crowns and zirconia crowns for damaged or decayed baby teeth. There are a few reasons for this.

  • Simple placement process – Unlike ceramic “adult” crowns, it only takes one appointment to place a crown on a baby tooth. Dr. Gary will simply choose a pre-fitted crown that fits perfectly into your child’s mouth, prepare and clean the tooth, then bond it into place. The process is minimally-invasive, fast, and will provide long-lasting protection for your child’s tooth.
  • Lower cost – Custom-fitted crowns for adult teeth can cost thousands of dollars. While they are worth it for repairing permanent, adult teeth, there’s no reason to spend this much money on a baby tooth that will eventually fall out naturally. Stainless steel crowns and zirconia are much less expensive and still provide the same level of protection for your child’s tooth until it falls out as part of the natural oral development process.
  • Superior protection – Crowns strengthen the tooth and provide superior protection compared to fillings, so they are usually a better choice for long-term protection against tooth decay and further tooth damage.
